![]() For two hours we sat and talked, drinking pitcher after pitcher of beer (and a few other adult beverages, courtesy of Alfie). I was going to interview Alfred Bester? We soon found ourselves in one of the hotel bars at a corner booth, my friends and I looking outward and Alfie, pulling up a chair from a nearby table, with his back to the room. The next thing I remember I had asked for an interview to which he readily agreed. The convention was almost over and I and a few friends were resting in the lobby of the Muehlebach hotel when I caught the eye of Alfred Bester. Reviews Of course you want to know what other people said. She uses the term “ascientific” for ideas that are beyond the reach of science-the “hypothesis of God,” the existence of additional universes, the belief that subatomic particles are conscious-and explores fascinating questions about predictability (“Instead of worrying about simulating human brains, we should pay more attention to who gets to ask questions of artificial brains”), the meaning of life (passing on knowledge, as she sees it), and the existence of free will (“the future is determined by the past”), sometimes offering provocative conclusions: “It sounds crazy, but the idea that the past and future exist in the same way as the present is compatible with all we currently know.” Readers will want to have a basic knowledge of physics before entering, and will be quickly convinced by Hossenfelder’s case that the fact that “physics has something to say about our connection to the universe is not so surprising.” And though she asserts that “physicists are really good at answering questions, but really bad at explaining why anyone should care,” her curiosity and clever prose prove that doesn’t have to be the case. This is a story of the past so Grom is younger than in the book, and the story revolves around the events leading to the union of the pair. The main players are Grom, who we see in Of Poseidon, and his intended mate Nalia. It is supposed to be an extension on the backstory of events mentioned in Of Poseidon. ![]() Like most prequels, this is one that really should be read before the main first book because it makes you read it very differently when you know the future, even if you miss out on a lot of information given in the book. I don’t think my eyes have rolled that much in a story until I read this story. It is short, mainly because the prequel was short, but there isn’t much I want to say about it, partly for spoilers, and partly because it was annoying. I thought since I mentioned it we need to add in the review. But just when their connection grows deeper, tragedy strikes. Grom dreads this arrangement, until he meets Nalia - both beautiful and smart, she’s everything he ever wanted. Stories are important, being a vessel that can spirit our waking selves back and forth between a world where imagination is the primary life force, the literal burnoff of fumes from the very center of the universe. His stories ( Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Swamp Thing) are labors of love for those who indulge in 19th-century adventure stories, pop culture and Joseph Campbell-style doses of mysticism, folklore and mythology. Moore's mystical, highly literate, densely packed tales of adventure are crafted with one of the most loving pair of hands to pick up a pen.
